English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs by Degree

  • The EAP Program is offered during Fall semester, Spring semester, and in a June/July Summer semester
  • The EAP Program develops and assesses college-level academic English language proficiency, and completing the EAP program gives both undergraduate and graduate students at Andrews the opportunity to meet university English requirements
  • Individuals may take EAP Program classes for non-credit hours or for credit
  • A certificate of completion (CIEP Certificate) is awarded to students who complete the EAP Program
  • An English placement test (EPT) is used to place new students into one of four levels in the EAP: Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, and Level 4
  • A TOEFL (or any other English language proficiency test accepted by Andrews University) is not required for individuals to be placed into one of the four levels; however, if an individual has an English language proficiency test score on record, this score may be used as supplemental information in determining level placement, though the EPT score is the primary level placement indicator
  • Each of the four levels has three core classes: Grammar, Reading & Writing, and Listening & Speaking
  • The core classes are offered for either 4 non-credit hours or 4 credits
  • Individuals who successfully complete Level 2 of the program have the option of taking the Level 3 Skip Test; with a passing score on this test, individuals may move into some or all Level 4 core classes, thereby skipping some or all Level 3 core classes
  • In addition to the four levels of core classes, two categories of skill-building courses are offered, one for Level 1 and Level 2 students and another for Level 3 and Level 4 students
  • The skill-building classes are offered for either 2 non-credit hours or 2 credits; they are designed to supplement the core classes by offering focused practice in specific academic skills students will need as they transition to their studies in university degree programs
  • To complete the program and earn the CIEP Certificate, an individual must do all of the following:
    • Pass (B grade or higher) all core classes starting at the level in which the individual was initially placed until Level 4 is completed
    • Pass (B grade or higher) a certain number of skill-building classes: individuals who start the program in Level 1 must take and pass seven (7) skill-building classes; individuals who start in Level 2 must take and pass five (5) skill-building classes; individuals who start in Level 3 must take and pass three (3) skill-building classes; individuals who start in Level 4 must take and pass one (1) skill-building class.
    • Pass the required EAP Speaking Test; individuals typically take the speaking test when they successfully complete Level 3; an additional chance to pass the test is given after successful completion of Level 4
    • Pass the required EAP Exit Exam, which is given upon successful completion of Level 4

The TOEFL (or any other English language proficiency test) is not required to complete the EAP Program.
