Sociologists study the formation and interaction of human groups and the individual’s relationship to social groups by using a theoretical framework which examines how institutions and groups function for the success of a society, the conflicts that may be inherent in group interaction, and how human beings shape and are shaped by surrounding cultural and social structures.

General Concentration - 18
Choose 18 credits from SOCI courses in consultation with an advisor. Criminal Justice Concentration - 24
The criminal justice concentration provides a foundation in law and criminology for students seeking a career in criminal justice. As there are a broad range of careers in the field of criminal justice, students should consult their advisor to choose classes related to their educational or occupational goals.
Additional Requirements
- Students completing the Sociology BS are required to take the Major Field Test in Sociology before graduation.
- Students completing the Sociology BS must take 27 credits from courses numbered 300 or above.
Recommendations
- Majors are encouraged to attend at least one professional conference before graduation.
- A reading knowledge of a foreign language is strongly recommended for those planning on graduate work in Sociology.
