Biochemistry BS

We provide a comprehensive learning experience in the biochemical sciences with significant bench-top laboratory experiences using the latest in chemical instrumentation. Our students learn how to be biochemists with a Seventh-day Adventist worldview, solving real problems in today’s world. Our graduates enter diverse careers as professional biochemists, academic researchers, commercial pharmaceutical researchers, physicians, dentists, pharmacists, lawyers, and a myriad of other careers. We offer a Biochemistry BS with the following two concentrations:

The Biomedical Concentration builds a strong foundation for those preparing for a career in medicine or dentistry, as well as for students who plan to enter the workplace after finishing at Andrews. Students take coursework that prepares them for professional schools while simultaneously creating a solid base of knowledge and hands-on experience they can use to launch a research or lab career after earning their bachelor of science degree.

The Pharmaceutical Chemistry Concentration is an accelerated track to a career as a pharmacist for students planning to earn a PharmD degree from Loma Linda University School of Pharmacy (LLUSP). Students study for 3 years at Andrews to receive an excellent preparation in biochemistry and adjacent fields. Students who are accepted, matriculate to LLUSP. After successfully completing the first year of pharmacy school at LLUSP, students will earn a bachelor of science degree from Andrews. These students continue three more years at LLUSP to earn a PharmD in a total of 7 years from the beginning of college. This program is only available in partnership with LLUSP. Students who choose to attend a different pharmacy school, or not to pursue a career in pharmacy, may switch to the biomedical concentration to finish their bachelor’s degree at Andrews.

Total Credits - 120

Concentration -12

Biomedical Concentration - 12

Pharmaceutical Chemistry Concentration - 12

This concentration is part of a 3+4 program partnership with Loma Linda University School of Pharmacy (LLUSP). It is only available to students who have been accepted into LLUSP’s PharmD program. Students can switch to the BS Biochemistry-Biomedical concentration program to finish at Andrews if they are not accepted by LLUSP.

All Andrews ACE requirements must be fulfilled at Andrews. The remainder of coursework at LLUSP (beyond the 8 credits of RXPS courses) are general electives for the Andrews Degree.

To fulfill Andrews graduation requirements, students must leave Andrews with at least 91 credits. Therefore, three credits of general electives must be taken at Andrews beyond the required classes.

Cognates - 23+

No course with a grade below C- may count toward cognate requirements.

General Education (Andrews Core Experience)

Students must fulfill all Bachelor’s Degree requirements listed in the Andrews Core Experience .

Student Learning Outcomes

At the end of the program, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the identification and transformation of matter.
  • Demonstrate involvement in the discovery of chemical and biochemical knowledge.
  • Communicate chemical and biochemical information to a diversity of audiences using a variety of formats.
  • Practice competency in common lab activities and instrumentation; use safe laboratory & waste management practices; understand impact of chemical activities on environment.
