The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association created certification standards for Speech-Language Pathology Assistants in 2020. These standards establish a uniform standard for the knowledge and skill level expected of assistants and ensure that all ASHA-certified assistants meet the same rigorous requirements. Due to the shortage of Speech-Language Pathologists across the U.S., there is a need for more universities to provide a degree with the appropriate academic and clinical requirements to meet the certification standards. This gives students an opportunity for a terminal degree at the bachelor’s level with the ability to enter the workforce as a professional. It also provides the appropriate prerequisites for a student to further their academic experience and pursue a graduate degree in Speech-Language Pathology at a later date.

Required general education courses Student Learning Outcomes
- Students will demonstrate their ability to integrate their faith into clinical practice and explain professional responsibilities within the ethical and legal boundaries of a speech-language pathology assistant.
- Students will describe typical and disordered speech, language, and communication development across the lifespan and identify characteristics of communication disorders and communication differences.
- Students will summarize the process of communication and the characteristics of effective communication.
- Students will demonstrate the ability to engage in service learning and implement evidence-based treatment plans under the supervision of a certified Speech-language pathologist.
- Students will utilize professional oral and written communication during collaboration and communication with a certified Speech-language pathologist and when documenting services and maintaining records.
